Mint Gardens
by Becki Andrus
Mint is one of the easiest herbs to grow, it can be added to a wide range of dishes to enhance flavor, and can be put into sauces, jelly, tea, and other drinks for a very pleasant, aromatic, and healthy effect... and the way to get the freshest mint is to grow it yourself. It was native to the Mediterranean but now this hardy herb has spread to all regions of the world and is known to improve digestion, relieve heartburn and headaches, and help control asthma and allergies.
Mint plants grow best in areas where there is partial to direct sunlight for about 6 hours of the day. The soil should be rich and moist and neither soggy nor too dry. Mint tends to thrive in warm climates but it can easily grow just about anywhere. If you are beginning to put mint plants in your garden, place them a few feet apart from each other-and away from sensitive plants- and make sure that they are not overwatered. Trim the stems when they start getting long because each stalk can grow 12 to 18 inches. Rust is one of the few diseases that can plague mint plants but this can be controlled by supplying the surrounding area with an organic dust. If the leaves of your mint plants have orangey spots on the underside of them, this is a sign that your plants are being affected by rust.
Mint is actually so easy to grow that precautions should be taken so that it does not start growing where it isn't wanted. It grows and germinates rapidly so it can easily take over a garden if it is allowed to. In order to avoid this, the stems of mint plants should be trimmed regularly and kept short. Mint plants should not be allowed to grow among delicate plants because it may strangle out the nutrients of the other plants and kill them. Instead, keep a plot specifically for mint by itself or among hardy plants like rose bushes. Otherwise, it is wise to plant mint either in its own pot or in a paved area where it cannot spread too easily. Mint is quite tough so it can survive on its own but if it does happen to get out of control and exists among other plants, the soil around those plants should be fertilized frequently because the mint will deprive the other plants of nutrients if not.
Mint can be a very convenient herb to have at your fingertips and because of how tough it is, it is an easy one to maintain. Preserving mint leaves is very, they just need to be dried out in an airy place, but this would not be necessary if you have a reliable source of mint in your garden. As long as it is kept in control, this herb can be integrated into dishes, sauces, drinks-or it can just perfume the air in your home- after simply picking it from your garden.
