2009 Ultra High Relief - St Gaudens Double Eagle

The 2009 Ultra High relief St. Gaudens double eagle is now (possibly!) my all time favorite gold coin! I love this coin!
Tragically the gold coin won't be returning my love (!), but as Woody Allen once memorably said, "Unrequited love is the only form of love which lasts!" So, what's so special that it has displaced the other gold coins in my affection? Well, first a bit of history:
The sculptor who designed the original 1907 gold double eagle coin was the legendary Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
In discussions with Theodore Roosevelt, they developed a vision that the coin would have a high relief- much like the coins minted in Ancient times by the Greeks & the Romans.
But there was a problem;
the minting technology available at the time, required that the coins took up to 7 strikes before the relief could be raised far enough to meet saint Gaudens approval.
And this simply destroyed the tooling.
As a result, very few (understatement) of these original coins were produced....and don't even ask what they cost!
So what hope was there for us mortals?
Good news came our way last year when the United States mint decided to apply modern technology to the original plaster casts- and produce an updated version of this great coin.
Unlike the original, part of the problem of die wear was offset by striking in softer pure gold (as these coins are definitely not intended for circulation like their Grand daddy's were).
Understand this- the Saint Gaudens gold double eagle has long been considered to be one of the most beautiful coins ever minted. And the high relief version....... A step beyond that!
It's a jaw dropping coin.
So, if you only buy one gold coin this year....then you clearly need to buy the 2009 ULTRA HIGH RELIEF ST. GAUDENS DOUBLE EAGLE, and I am sure you will fall in love with it, like I have.
