Lamborghini Murcielago At Its Best
by Phoenix Delray
The Lamborghini Murcielago is one of the latest cars of the luxury car maker that has gotten its name from the world of bullfighting. This car was named for a fighting bull that in 1879 survived 28 strikes from the sword in a fight against Rafael Molina Sanches at the Coso de los califas bullring in Cordoba, Spain. It is said that the bull fought with so much passion and strength that the matador chose to spare its life. The bull was later presented as a gift to Don Antonio Miura, who was a local breeder at the time. This was the beginning of the famous line of Miura fighting bulls, which also lent the name to one of Lamborghinis first cars.
The word Murcielago is the Spanish word for the flying mammal, the bat. The pronunciation is usually different between Castilian Spanish, which is spoken in most of Spain and the Southern Spain or Latin American pronunciation. The car itself is a sports car that is often put in the ranks of a supercar. It is Lamborghinis flagship model and the halo car of their lineup. As a high performance two door, two seat coupe that is powered by an evolutionary V12 engine, it also has a roadster version of it that was introduced in 2004.
This super car was first introduced in 2001 for the 2002 model year and was quickly established as the famed Diablo supercars successor. It was this design that was also the luxury automakers first new design in an incredible eleven years, and it was also the first design under the ownership of German automaker Audi. The automakers head of design from 1998 to 2005 was Peruvian born Belgian Luc Donckervolke, and it was he who designed and styled the Murcielago.
In 2003 the automaker celebrated its 40th anniversary by releasing their anniversary edition of the supercar. In previous decades, the company had released commemorative editions of the Diablo and Countach, and it was the Murcielagos turn that year. The vehicles were produced in a very limited run of only 50 vehicles, and there were several enhancements that were added to the cars for the commemoration. Some of them included a limited edition body color that was blue but labeled as Jade Green, upgraded wheels, a supped up exhaust system, carbon fiber exterior detailing and a numbered plaque that was at the inside rear window. In addition, the 40th anniversary commemorative edition of the Lamborghini Murcielago included new leather trim interiors and several electronic features.
